Spiced yumyums aka Koeksisters recipe

I was born in South Africa and this is our usual Sunday breakfast!

It’s like a spiced syrupy coconut sprinkled yumyum! Its delicious and once you try one you can’t stop eating them! They’re addictive!

My mum usually makes these a few times a year, big batch to freeze extras! Lucky me 😊 but here’s the recipe if you would like to try it! You won’t regret it

Koeksisters
1kg flour (8cups)
125 ml sugar
2 pkt of instant yeast
2tsp ground ginger
1tsp cinnamon
1tsp fresh nutmeg
1tsp all spice
2 or 3 tbsp of aniseed
1 tsp ground cardamon
2 tspsalt
1/2 cup of oil
700 ml lukewarm water

Mix all dry ingredients together then make a soft sticky mixture. Let it rise double in size. Roll and cut into small rolls. Let it rise double in size before frying it till golden.

Cool off while making your syrup, mix Equal parts of water and sugar, I always put a cinnamon stick in and let it thicken up to a Syrup. Dip the koeksisters in the syrup and put coconut flakes on.

I’ve never personally made them, my mum is the expert so I just let her make it .

Someday I’ll try to make it myself and see how they turn out. My partner and my oldest like them without the coconut so I skip that step for them.

They are amazing and must be eaten warm. They are syrupy and coconutty and spiced inside. Specially delicious with a coffee on a cold winter morning. So mix up your routine and spoil yourself or your family by making these south african koeksisters and you’ll see they will become a new family favourite. Goodbye toast & cereals

Let me know if you’ve made it and how much you love it ❤️
